Callum Russell has been voted Athletes’ Athlete of the Month for September after becoming Britain's first-ever men's hand-cycling world champion.

The 30-year-old won the H4 title at the 2026 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships with an emphatic sprint finish that saw him edge out his rivals in the final metres.

It capped a successful championship for Callum, who also took silver in the H4 time trial.

Presented by the British Elite Athletes Association (BEAA), the Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award celebrates the achievements of Britain’s elite sportspeople.

It recognises competitive achievements, personal development, inspiring comebacks, charity work, and awareness-raising, and is voted for by BEAA members - athletes funded by UK Sport’s World Class Programme.

Congratulations to Callum and also to his fellow nominees Mallory Franklin (canoeing), Alice Kinsella (gymnastics) Stephen McGuire and Sophie Newnham (boccia).

Athletes can get involved in choosing the winner of future awards via the BEAA’s monthly member emails.
