Windsurfer Emma Wilson has been crowned Athletes’ Athlete of the Month for April.

The two-time Olympic bronze medallist has been recognised by Britain’s elite sportspeople following her success at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia in Mallorca, which marks the beginning of the Olympic sailing season.

Emma won the prestigious regatta’s top prize, the Princess Sofia Trophy, after winning 14 out of 21 races in the foiling windsurfing.

Reflecting on her performance, Emma told the British Elite Athletes Association (BEAA):

“I was happy with my week in Palma. I had some solid races, and they just seemed to keep going well.

“Following on from the Olympics last year, it’s nice to see what I’ve trained and progressed show in the race results. It feels good for me and Sam, my coach to see the rewards of our work.

“It is up there [as a career achievement]. Winning the bronze medal in Tokyo was probably the highest and then, second highest is winning that outright trophy in Palma because no British woman has ever done it before.

“It’s pretty cool to be recognised like that – it’s powerful.”

The Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award is presented by the BEAA on behalf of its members – athletes funded by UK Sport’s World Class Programme – and recognises competitive achievements, personal development, inspiring comebacks, charity work, and awareness-raising.

Emma was up against Emily Campbell (weightlifting), Jordan Houlden (diving), Jess Liddon (shooting) and Team Mouat (curling) for April’s prize.

“It’s super cool [to win this award],” Emma added.

“I’m a mega sports fan and when I saw the people I was nominated with, it was incredible.  I mean everyone nominated is a great athlete and so, I’m just really happy and grateful to have been voted athlete of the month. I just hope I can keep pushing forward.”

Congratulations to Emma for winning and to Emily, Jordan, Jess and Team Mouat for being shortlisted.

Athletes can get involved in choosing the winner of future awards via the BEAA’s monthly member emails.
